Research has shown that because it often can’t reach into where the new cavity begins, we (dentists and hygienists) were missing 76% of the most common cavities. 3 or 4 times we said things were fine, we’d missed diagnosing the cavity. Below, the FDA Approved “Diagnodent” or “Laser Cavity Scanner” uses a high-tech beam of laser light to reach down into areas the “pick” or “explorer” was simply unable to access. Now we are able to identify cavities when they are in their earliest stages, when they are small, easy to fix and least expensive to fix as well. The Diagnodent sends out an audio signal, the higher the tone the deeper the cavity. If the numbers on the machine indicate a fifteen or higher, a new cavity has been found.
